Overview
Blooms summer through frost. Clusters of rose to mauve florets on sturdy stems. In our trials the species is nearly identical to the variety Soulmate. Attractive lance-shaped leaves. Use for cut flowers and garden beds. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Larval host for monarch butterflies. Native to North America. Also known as pink milkweed and rose milkweed. Perennial in Zones 3-8.
Planting
Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost with 30-day cold stratification, or direct sow after last frost; cold-stratified seeds can be sown in fall for winter stratification
Growing
Sun: partial. Water: high. Soil: Moist to average well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral pH. Space plants 18" apart. Germination: 7-14 days.
Pests & diseases
Common pests: Milkweed beetles, aphids. Common diseases: Root rot if overwatered; fungal leaf spots in humid conditions.
