  • Overview

    Broad purple leaves with gently scalloped margins. Color appears early on young leaves, especially in spring and fall. Mild flavor. Somewhat quick to bolt. Plant densely so leaves remain a proper size for baby leaf and petioles elongate for easy harvest. Also available in organic seed.

    Direct sow in spring after last frost, or in late summer for fall crop. Can start indoors 4-6 weeks before planting for transplants

  • Growing

    Sun: partial. Water: high. Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with moderate organic matter. Space plants 6" apart. Germination: 7-10 days.

  • Pests & diseases

    Common pests: Aphids, slugs, snails, flea beetles. Common diseases: Downy mildew, lettuce mosaic virus, botrytis (gray mold).
